Structural Strengthening
PROJECT OVERVIEW
A routine inspection of a five-story parking structure in the downtown Denver Tech Center identified spalling and cracking on several overhead beams. Although the issue did not pose an immediate threat to the integrity of the facility, the owners decided to carry out preventative maintenance.
SOLUTION
The structure owners engaged the John Rohrer Contracting Company (JRCC), to carry out the rehabilitation work. They in turn contacted GeoTree Solutions wanting to use LOCTITE RenewWrap CF335 with integrated EZ-Slit technology, fiber reinforced polymer that when saturated with resin forms a structural strengthening material.
EZ-Slit enables the installation team to slit the material into the desired widths without being concerned with the fraying that occurs with FRP materials from other suppliers.
In order to resolve the issues, the JRCC team first identified and patched the cracking concrete with EZ Paste. The 8” wide strips were then pre-saturated with LPL resin and allowed to partially cure to become tacky while the concrete surface was being prepared. The concrete was primed with more LPL resin and when ready, the strips of LOCTITE RenewWrap were applied.
In all, 43 locations were rehabilitated with each taking a day to complete.
